Thalapathy Vijay, at the peak of his career, has shocked fans with his decision to quit acting and focus on full-time politics. In 2023, the Kollywood superstar made history by delivering his first 600 crore grosser worldwide with Leo, leading fans to believe that he would soon give Kollywood its first 1000 crore film. However, his sudden announcement of retiring from films has left many disappointed. Before he steps away, fans have one final chance to celebrate his superstardom with Thalapathy 69. There’s no doubt that Thalapathy 69, being Vijay’s swan song, has the potential to break records and dominate the box office. However, despite the hype surrounding it, there are concerns that the film may not live up to its potential. Speculation about the movie’s concept has been rampant, with rumors suggesting that it might be a remake of Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Bhagavanth Kesari. While the makers haven’t officially confirmed this, actor VTV Ganesh recently revealed during a promotional event for Sankranthiki Vasthunam that Thalapathy 69 is indeed a remake of the 2023 film.
VTV Ganesh shared that Vijay was a fan of Bhagavanth Kesari and wanted Anil Ravipudi, who directed the original, to helm the Tamil remake. However, Ravipudi reportedly declined the offer for reasons that remain unclear.
While Bhagavanth Kesari was praised for its concept, it wasn’t a major success at the worldwide box office, which is a cause of concern for Vijay’s fans. The film was a typical commercial entertainer without much to offer in terms of innovation, and remakes often struggle to create the same impact as original films.
With Vijay’s star power, Thalapathy 69 is likely to earn well at the box office, but reaching the 1000 crore mark seems unlikely. A fresh, large-scale project could have had a better chance of achieving that milestone, but with a remake at its core, the film’s potential seems limited.
