Yash Chopra, a towering figure in Indian filmmaking, was known for his strong vision and uncompromising approach to work. So, what made him lock Rani Mukerji’s parents in his office? In an old interview with News 18, Rani revealed the reason behind the unusual incident: it was because she was turning down every film offer that came her way.
After the failure of Mujhse Dosti Karoge, a film produced by Yash Raj Films, Rani became reluctant to take on new projects. She recalled how she began refusing roles, much to the confusion of her mother, who thought she had lost her mind. Rani explained, “I was rejecting everything, and my mother thought I had gone mad because I was saying ‘no’ to every offer. I was starting to make my own decisions.”
During that time, many critics and magazines wrote her off, saying her career was over, and Rani admitted she started to believe them. “I was like, ‘maybe they’re right, but I’m not going to give up. I’m going to choose something I truly believe in,’” she shared.
The turning point came when Saathiya came her way. Rani recalled how her parents went to meet Yash Chopra to explain that she wasn’t interested in doing the film. In response, Yash Chopra called her up and said, “Beta, you’re making a huge mistake. I’m locking the door of my office, and I’m not letting your parents out until you say yes to this film.” Rani admitted that she’s forever grateful to him for pushing her in the right direction.
Saathiya, which also starred Vivek Oberoi, turned out to be a huge success and is now regarded as a cult classic. Directed by Shaad Ali, it was a remake of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Alaipayuthey.
